Providing comprehensive geotechnical testing services for bridge connectors and embankments.
Date Completed: 2015
At CQC, we were entrusted with the critical task of providing comprehensive geotechnical testing services for the bridge connectors and embankments of the project. Our focus was on ensuring the structural integrity and stability of the bridge components, guaranteeing the safety and functionality of the infrastructure.
The scope of our involvement encompassed the design and analysis of bridge connectors featuring continuous steel plate girders and prestressed concrete beams. We collaborated closely with the project team to develop robust foundation systems that could withstand the varying loads and conditions. Our geotechnical recommendations played a vital role in determining the appropriate shallow and deep foundation systems to support the bridge abutments, piers, and internal spans.
Bridge approach embankments, reaching heights of up to 22 feet, posed unique challenges in terms of retaining wall construction and soil stabilization. Leveraging our expertise, we provided guidelines for the construction of shallow foundation retaining walls and Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retained soils. This ensured the stability and longevity of the embankments, mitigating potential settlement issues.
Our geotechnical field investigation was conducted meticulously, employing hollow stem auger drilling and performing TCP (thermal conductivity probe) testing. Through these methods, we gathered crucial data on the subsurface conditions, allowing us to develop detailed Wincore logs and pier capacity curves. These findings served as valuable references in evaluating the bearing capacity and performance of the foundation systems.
By delivering thorough geotechnical testing services, our role in the project extended beyond mere data collection. We played an instrumental part in supporting the design decisions, mitigating geotechnical risks, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Our commitment to excellence contributed to the overall success of the project, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted partner in geotechnical engineering.
